WHAT IS PARENTING COORDINATION?

What Is a Parenting Coordinator?

A parenting coordinator (PC) is a neutral professional — typically an attorney or mental health expert with specialized training — who helps divorced or separated parents resolve ongoing disputes about their children. The process is designed for parents who have already worked through a divorce or custody order but continue to experience conflict in implementing it.

Parenting coordination is a structured, child-focused intervention. It is not therapy and it is not mediation. It is a practical, solutions-oriented process focused on one thing: helping your children thrive.

A parenting coordinator helps parents navigate:

• Day-to-day scheduling and parenting time disputes
• Decisions about schooling, extracurricular activities, and childcare
• Medical and behavioral health appointments and treatment decisions
• Holiday schedules and vacation planning
• Communication between co-parents
• Implementing and adjusting existing court orders

COURT-ORDERED VS. VOLUNTARY

Court-Ordered or Voluntary — We Can Help Either Way

Parenting coordination can come about in two ways. Sometimes a judge orders parenting coordination as part of a custody proceeding — particularly in high-conflict cases. Other times, parents choose it voluntarily because they recognize they need a neutral third party to help them work through recurring disagreements.

Either way, the goal is the same: less conflict, clearer communication, and a more stable home environment for your children. Whether this is a court referral or your own decision, we are here to help.

HOW IT WORKS

What to Expect from the Process

Every family's situation is different, and parenting coordination is flexible enough to reflect that.

Generally, the process works like this:

  • Initial consultation — We talk about your situation, your children, and what is not working. No judgment. Just listening.

  • Agreement or court order — We establish the framework for how the parenting coordination process will work, including scope, decision-making authority, and communication guidelines.

  • Ongoing sessions — We meet as needed — sometimes together, sometimes separately — to work through specific issues and decisions.

  • Resolution and documentation — When decisions are reached, they are documented clearly so both parents have a record they can follow.

We serve clients in White Plains, throughout Westchester County, and across the Tri-State Area. Virtual sessions are available for families outside the immediate area.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR MY FAMILY?

Is Parenting Coordination Right for Your Family?

Parenting coordination tends to work well when:

  • You and your co-parent have a court order but struggle to implement it consistently

  • Disputes about the children are frequent and difficult to resolve on your own

  • Communication between you and your co-parent has broken down

  • You want to resolve co-parenting issues without returning to court

  • A judge has recommended or ordered parenting coordination as part of your case

If you are not sure whether parenting coordination is the right fit for your situation, the best next step is a conversation. We will listen to what you are dealing with and give you an honest assessment of what might help.
